Tomato Bob, home of the awesome heirloom tomato plants, still has seeds on sale for 25 cents. While it may seem too late in the season for planting there is still time to grow loads of vegetables, including your fall vegetables like broccoli. Take a look and see if there's anything that appeals to you.

Free Online Read - The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer

Submitted by georgiana on Thu, 06/10/2010 - 02:02.

From now until midnight July 5th you can read Stephenie Meyer's new novella The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner for free online. You can't download it but you can read it and if you decided to buy it a donation will go to the Red Cross.

It tells the story off Bree Tanner, a character introduced in Eclipse. I haven't read it yet so can't vouch for it but if you're a Twilight fan you most likely won't want to miss out.

Gardening Advice

Submitted by georgiana on Wed, 06/09/2010 - 00:00.

At some point most of us are going to be stumped by something we find in our gardens, whether these are elaborate gardens that cover acres or are just a couple of herb containers growing in our kitchens. An excellent place to seek gardening advice is your local university, especially if your school happens to have an agriculture department.

Our local school offers a huge amount of information, including monthly gardening tips, as well as training master gardeners to work in their communities helping the less skilled get the hang of growing amazing things. You can also send in a question and get an answer.

WE HEART VAMPIRES!!!!!! – Free Online Read

Submitted by georgiana on Tue, 06/08/2010 - 02:23.

I love this story by Meghan McCarron. Published by Strange Horizons it's about a teen girl who drifts along in a bad friendship, making poor choices and suffering the consequences without quite figuring out why these things are happening. Framed within a vampire story, the characters are real and heartbreaking. Lest I make it sound too gloomy rest assured that it also made me laugh out loud. http://www.strangehorizons.com/2010/20100503/vampires-f.shtml

Seven Hundred Dollars Worth of Vegetables From 100 Square Foot Garden

Submitted by georgiana on Mon, 06/07/2010 - 02:30.

Here's an interesting article about a family that got nearly seven hundred dollars worth of organic vegetables from a small garden in their yard. The author happened to use a five foot by 20 foot section but of course you’re welcome to figure out your own layout. My best advice to new gardeners – don't grow food you don't like. I've read quite a few blog posts from people recently who grew something like Kale or tomatoes because those are supposed to be easy or cheap and then the owners didn't want to eat the produce. If you're gardening to enhance the family menu then make sure you start off with things they love to eat.

Here's an interesting article from Mother Earth News about a family that lives on less than five thousand dollars per year.

The author lists 75 money saving ideas and then asks readers to add more suggestions in the comments. The comments are pretty typical for online, with everything from troll bait to actual useful information.
